The Ladybug 3 is an ideal solution for applications that require high resolution, a weather-resistant case, direct FireWire connection, or the ability to synchronize to external devices such as an external trigger or light source. Six 2 MP cameras enable the system to collect video from more than 80% of the full 360° sphere. Customers can access and control their Ladybug 3 with the Ladybug SDK.

Where some systems use mirrors or fisheye lenses to create the effect of a panoramic view, the Ladybug systems use six cameras with high quality Sony CCD image sensors to truly deliver images gathered from six vantage points for 90% of the full sphere. Five CCDs are positioned in a horizontal ring and one is positioned vertically pointing upwards. The six cameras are pre- calibrated; this is the pivotal technology that allows the many other innovations within the system to be possible. Since lens settings, such as focus and iris, are fixed to ensure the camera stays calibrated, there is no need for in-field calibration.
Geometric-Based Calibration and Accuracy
Rather than relying purely on mechanical calibration, the Ladybug systems use software to calibrate each camera on its own and in relation to each of the other five cameras. The system is able to know the vector associated with every pixel, in each camera, to one-hundredth of a degree accuracy. This in turn enables applications to know where the camera is in relation to the rest of the world.
